Flowers and Foliage: GBBD, January 2021

Plant window jan 2021

My plant window in January boasts boldly colorful flowers on my no-fuss potted cyclamen and lots of foliage on my potted amaryllis (Hippeastrum) bulbs.

The amaryllis are much less reliable than the cyclamen in my cool Maine house. Normally, I do see the beginnings of some flower buds on the amaryllis by mid-January – but not this year. There are two potted amaryllis bulbs in my bedroom that have not yet put up any growth at all. I am keeping an eye on these because these late growers are often the first to put up flower buds. Fingers crossed to see some buds soon. Meanwhile, I will enjoy my cyclamen plants, especially the streaked flowers.

Thanks, Ellen. These bright colors are a welcome addition to the mute palette of winter.

Your windowsill garden is lovely, Jean. I’ve only see the first of my Amaryllis/Hippeastrum buds but all mine are outside. As our temperature climbed to 88F on Friday, I imagine the rest of the bulbs may get a move on soon.

Kris, It would be lovely to be able to grow these outside in the garden, but the windowsill will have to do for me.

Jean, do you ever use a heat mat, or placing the amaryllis on a heater?

Gary, That is probably a good idea. I don’t have any heaters that I could put them on, but maybe I’ll invest in a heat mat next year.

How pretty! I could never keep flowers inside without overwatering them!

Betty, I water everything once a week. My house plants are survivors that can live with that regime.

Your window sill looks so lovely and neatly arranged! Ours is stuffed full with over wintering plants that are too hot from the radiator directly underneath. I love the blush pink Cyclamen, those are really special.
